Comment:

I picked up an HP4plus printer and a Jet Direct box for my home network...

Never installed a Jet Direct box into a network before and not sure how to do it...

I have a PDC, NT4.0 Server...one W2K, one W95, 2-W98, and an iMac...I would like them all to be able to print to the HP4plus...

I have the Jet Direct software, and my MAC address from the Jet Direct box...

Do I install this on my Server first with NT drivers???...

And then from each computer will I "see" it on the network???...

Then, I assume, I do a printer network install from each computer and install drivers specifically for that OS...

Do I have this about right???

Thanx for any help
Steve

Jet direct connects through ethernet, so you only need to install the appropriate JetDirect software on the individual machines that will access it (the printer is not locally connected, then 'shared' as in direct connect printers).

Install the Jet direct software on your server. It will guide you through seting up the printer on the server. Once it's installed on the server you can share it. Your other machines will print through the server, when you do those installs choose network printer and look under your server, it should be right there. It is possible to install the Jet Direct software on all the machines and print directly to the printer from each. I'm not sure what would happen if 2 machines sent a print job at the same time though. If you run it through the server it will take care of spooling everything properly.

You will probably have to print directly from your Mac. I'm not sure if you can connect a mac to a printer on an NT server or not.

1. Follow instruction from the box to install Jet Direct to Printer.

2. Call HP to assist you in setting up IP address for printer (procedure can be found in the website). It is very difficult to set up since there are no manual to it.

3. Download HP Install Network Printer Wizard from HP.com

4. After extract this file, it will ask you for printer IP address and printer name.

5. If there are more than one users send printout, don't worry. The game is first come first serve. This procedure eliminate print server. Have question, HP tech is very helpful and is free if you purchase the item less than one year.

3. Extract this file to every workstation.
