Comment: I just bought a LITEON CD-RW its a 16X10X40. The instructions are not much help. I installed it and then when I booted up, my bios read that it did not see the ide slave device (i think). DO I have to put my old cd back in and install the software? I went to WWW.liteon.com and found a download for cd-rw firmware. I did not want to download it before I got any advice.

Reply: (edit)Keep your old cdrom drive in the computer. set your devices to: hard drive Primary master(you won't need to even touch it) Old cdrom Primary slave(on same data cable as your harddrive) New burner Secondary slave(on its own data cable) Make sure that in your systems bios, all the ide channels are set up as autodetect

Reply: (edit)Setting the drive to slave or master has no difference if you only have one drive on the channel, it will still work without any problems as long as the jumpers are set correctly.

Reply: (edit)I forgot to answer one of the original questions. The reason why you should leave the old cdrom drive in is so you can copy cd's. If the old cdrom drive can't read faster than 32x, you should get a faster one or remove it altogether. A 48x max is very cheap to buy(if you didn't know) Your burner is able to write at 16x so your cdrom reader must beable to read much faster so that you won't get a buffer under-run (data coming into the burner too slow). One last point is that the read speed of a cdrom cdrive is the maximum sustained transfer rate. It is probably reading a bit slower.

Reply: (edit)First of all, when I bought the puter, I got the slim desktop so there is only room for one CD internally. I thought that I would be able to copy the CD's in a temp folder then burn copies of them. Secondly, there is probably something to making sure the jumpers are correctly set. Then way my other cd rom was set was the "cable" jumper. So maybe the new one should be that way too.

Reply: (edit)No it shouldn't be set to cable select. it should be set to Master and It must be on its own data cable. If your only going to have 1 drive(the burner) you'll have to make images of the cdrom before buring it. Just copying the files and folders won't always work. What buring software are you intending to use? I don't recomend using Adaptec. Try Nero Buring Rom.

Reply: (edit)With 1 cdrom drive, you need a way to copy your cd's data to where your buring to. You must make an ISO image of the cd. Use WINIMAGE to make images. It works good and Nero burns them easily. If your case was bigger and had room to have your old cdrom drive in it, things will go a lot better for you. Dealing with images can be hastling enven for those who do it al the time. After you make an image, you must defrag your harddrive or you may have whats called buffer under-run. That means that the data isn't getting to your burner fast enough. That happens when your harddrive is fragmented up and nero has to go all over your harddrive trying to get the data and that takes alot of time if the image isn't all in one area.

Reply: (edit)Well I put the old cd back in and installed the software. Then I went to boot it up with the new cd-rw and then all of a sudden I got a blue screen and all of this hexadecimal data. At the bottom it sead something about a data dump. I cut the power, rebooted a 2sd time and it did it again. I then booted up and hit "last known good". After that it was ok but I am still freaked out. Any idea on what might of happened? Also before I forget, thanx for your earlier help.

Reply: (edit)I don't think that there was any use of putting your old cdrom drive back in because the burner uses the same drivers as the old one. The software you use makes the difference that turns the burner into an actuall burner, not a cdrom reader. What might have happened was a bad install. Anywas you must install nero when the burner is actually installed in the computer. How did you set up the burner? Secondary master? Is it on its own ide cable?

Reply: (edit)It is a master on its own ide cable. Also do you think that I did anything bad to my computer? All the apps that I have checked are working.

Reply: (edit)Master is the first device on an IDE channel. Al modern computers come with at least 2 ide channels. Primary and Secondary( while some new motherboards running DDR ram have 4) Your bootable harddrive always has to be master on the Primary channel. Things would be alot simpler if you had a bigger case.
