I prefer to use NT Ver.4 for a stable and running network

NT 4 - Server is very solid...

Many software applications have not been refined for Windows 2000 within our environment so our OS follows our needs.

NT 4 w/ Option Pack 4, SP6a

Well...

It depends entierly on your skills base, on your requirements and on the nature of what you do.

As the other 2 respondents have said NT4 is tried and tested and on the whole is very stable (relative to other MS products). Its well supported applications wise and is relatively easy to configure and maintain.

On the other hand Win2000 seems to be as stable on the whole (in reviews I've seen and from personal experience of using 2000 for 9 months) but if implimented properly requires more setting up and configuration than NT4 and certainly there are certain application which don't work too well with it (especially older DOS and Windows 16 bit apps)

You need to stand back and assess EXACTLY what your looking to get out of your systems, what resources you have (both money, hardware and skill) and whether your applications run.

If you are starting from scratch with little prior knowledge or skills of either version and using up to date applications I would almost certainly go for 2000 over NT4 for the "If I'm doing it I do it once" reason. 2000 will be a steep learning curve from NT4 after the fact.

Just remember that for 2000 the hardware requirements for both desktop and server are pretty steep. I'd recoomend nothing lower than 128MB/500Mhz/5gig for workstation and 512MB/Dual 500Mhz/20gig server as a bare minimum for 2000 to give you some breathing space. Nt4 is considerably less hungry. (32/200/2gig)(256/350/10) but you have to obviously tailor it to your requirements.

Hope this helps

GO with windows 2000. A year down the road you will thank yourself. It has a lot of features, that the older model of NT doesn't have and if you need to install it on a workstation that does not meet the requirements AND providing you server is strong enough, you can just run the Terminal Services ;-)

I would go 2000 since NT is basically a dead horse. It will not be long before NT will not be supported like Win95 and 3.1. Save the later upgrade hassel and go 2000!
