In Windows Explorer, when clicking onto a JPG file, the small image preview to the left does not work anymore. It only works on GIF files. It used to work. How do I restore this or fix it? I suspect when I installed the IE 5.5 update it stop working right after that. ????

Microsoft article Q192573. This will tell you how to fix the registry and restore the Value to for jpg and a bunch of others.
URL is http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q192/5/73.asp
This will work for 95/98/and NT.
What I did was just copy the value from another image type.
use regedit and save the orignal key as jpgold. Then save one of the good keys like your gif key as your new jpg (or I believe you can call it what you want)
Now restore the good saved key as your jpg key.
