Comment:

I have an old server running NT Server and it was working perfectly right up until I got the smart idea to bump up the video resolution from 800 X 600 to 1024 X 768. Turns out it didnt like that, and now when it boots up all you see are lines on the screen. You are unable to navigate in windows and the last known good didnt help. The VGA boot was no help either, still got the lines. The only thing I can get to is a DOS prompt. Any way to set the resolution back through DOS???????

Do you have the bootdisk set or a CDROM to generate one from?
If so, use the bootdisks and rerun setup. You'll be given an option to repair a damaged NT installation.
Do it.

Actually, that's a stupid post;sorry. Probably inaccurate too. Don't know what I was thinking.
Navigate to the i386 folder on the NT CDROM if you don't have the bootdisk set. Run winnt /ox to create it. Reboot and run NT setup (I've done it about a billion times, but I still can't recall exactly when and where the option to repair a damaged installation occurs.)
Anyway, this option should present itself. When it does, there should be an option to change...video resolution?? Again, can't remember.
Sorry that this was such an unhelpful post.

Save yourself some time and boot the NT cdrom directly via the bios.

I would suggest trying a different monitor. Coming up in vga mode should have used adapter defaults [standard vga]. If that did not work you may have hardware issues with the card/monitor.

I have NEVER had last known good do me any good at all.

I should have mentioned this NT system was given to me without any boot disks or the NT cdrom. I'll try a different monitor and see what happens.

maybe your default video driver is misssing. Booting in VGA should work.

If I know my EULA, you should be able to (if this machine is licensed NT box - holographic spycamera logo on it) download off the internet or make a copy of a friend's NT CD-rom.

If you don't have significant proof of ownership of NT, then I recommend not doing so, since it is illegal. I see complete NT packages (manuals, box, CD, sticker) on ebay for about 5 to 10 dollars (3.50 for mine!) - just a blank CD-R costs almost as much as a authentic Microsoft one with all documentation pertaining.
