I need some advise with PDC and BDC

Comment:
Will a BDC automatically take over if the PDC goes offline? or must the BDC be manually promoted?
How does a BDC share the work load with the PDC when it comes to authenticating users?

I *THINK* a BDC will automatically promote itself to the role of PDC. As far as authentication, if the BDC receives the request first, it authenticates and never bothers the PDC.

The BDC will not promote itself to the PDC. You have to do this manually. If your PDC is only going to be down for a short time <= 1 day then I would leave it alone. After this though I would promote it to be the PDC.
There is no load balancing, it is first come first serve. Whoever gets the request first will answer it.
