Subject: I guess my hard disk crashed |
Comment: Hi, I need help to replace my hard disk. Not exactly the physical replacement but want to know what is the exact hard disk I need to buy to replace the present one. The computer is a Compaq presario(Old computer). It had windows NT 4.0. When I reloaded my operating system NT(Of course I took all the back ups, I did not loose any data)the networking stopped working. So, I loaded the NT work station on it. Hoping the adapter's software will be put in place. But I found that when I switch on the computer it starts dumping physical memory and no chance to even load windows95. So please help... can I set the present hard disk right and load windows95 or should I change the hard disk. If so please let me know the right hard disk. Thank you, Suresh

Reply: (edit)There is no need to replace the hard disk unless it has actually stopped working, which does not seem to be the case. It sounds like you just need to format it and reinstall Windows. Try booting from a DOS startup disk. If it loads up DOS and you can access the drive, run scandisk and let it do a surface scan. If no errors are found your drive is fine and you just need to reinstall.

Reply: (edit)Actually since you have NT it is probably formatted with the NTFS file system, in which case you won't be able to access it with a DOS startup disk. You can still do a clean install of Windows though, and this is probably all that's wrong. If you need help doing this just post back and mention which version of Windows you want to install on it, and someone will tell you what to do.

Reply: (edit)Thanks guys, you saved me some money. I used win95 startup disk and It says A>"Type command interpreter"(e.g., C:\windows\command.com). I am not sure about it. I tried putting in windows 95 installation CD but it doesn't kick up. I wish to format/reinstall windows 95. Please help. Suresh

Reply: (edit)Win 98/95 can not be installed as long the the MBR belongs to NT. NT should be the second O/S installed i.e. the win9x should've been installed first. ---Here is my idea--- Insert the NT Cd-rom and begin the install process up until it detects installed nt or the partition. If it detects the installed NT o/s then select to continue instlall. Delete the existing partition and the cut the power. Begin installation of win9x.

Reply: (edit)This will work, however, you will still need a working floppy startup disk because the win95 CD does not self boot. Try getting/creating one from another computer because the prompt for a valid command interpreter should not come up if you are using a working boot disk. borelli33

Reply: (edit)Change the boot order in bios as the Harddisk is likely chosen to be accessed first. Change it to boot to Floppy or CD Rom first.

Reply: (edit)Hi guys, Thanks for all th help. i could set my machine right. I just went into bios before the machine booted and asked for the next best configuration. The machine is working properly. Now i need to network the same with other computers. I have 3 win2000 computers, one the said NT machine, one 98 machine, and 4 95 machines. All the other machines are networked. But this NT machine does show signs of sensing the network. Try my best. Should all computers in the network use the same kind of adapters. Let me know how to get the adapter software.
