Subject: how to set fat format on ntOS: win. nt 4.0CPU/Ram: 64mb |
Comment: when i installed nt it didn't let me partition the 6.5 gig disk in one so i was 'smart' enough to partition only a gig and now im running out of space.i booted up from a win.98 bootdisk and fooled around with it and partitioned the the rest which the system recognises as far as the size goes but not the file allocation table format and cant use the rest of the space because of it.IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN SET FAT FORMAT ? Any help would be apriciated

Reply: (edit)You want to use the tools in NT to allocate the rest of the disk and format it. Disk Administrator is the tool you use in NT for that. Otherwise you have to use partition magic from a diskette to resize the nt partition.

Reply: (edit)Using a '98 bootdisk presumably you opted for large-drive support; thus you configured and then formatted the additional space as fat32? NT cannot see/access fat32 (without add-in utils) - thus no access to it... As already advised in the post above, use NT Disk Admin tools to (re)configure the space after the 1Gig (fat16?) Primary partition. It can be ntfs or a mix of fat16/ntfs - in which latter case you would have at least two logical-drives in that additional space... Note: Fat16 is limited to 4Gig max partition (or logical-drive) for NT/W2K/XP; ntfs significantly in excess of 4Gig...

Reply: (edit)El-Trucha: nt3x/4x will not/cannot see/access fat32 - without add-in utils. BUT W2K/XP can see/access fat32... Either you have the required util(s) installed in your nt3x/4x or you're using W2K/XP??? If neither of the latter then "somehow" you have achieved wot M$ etc. failed to achieve with nt3x/4x??? If this is the case (you succeeded where M$ failed) I'd be very interested to know how (so would M$ no doubt)...

Reply: (edit)thanx guyz i finally found disk utility and eventhough it took me some time was able to partition the damn disk.i didn't know that formating makes (or gives) the new space a system format but i still don't know how to set fat 32 because when i get the format window all the options i see in the dropdown menu is fat or ntsf.First i was looking for disk utility in the settings window hoping to find it there under some other mumbo-jumbo the after a half an hour of search i realised that it's in the start menu under programs, then i didn't know that i had to click on the space first that i want to partition so there is always something to learn on the machine.Thanx again guys ,i apreciated the help!!!

Reply: (edit)Obviously my last post came after you'd managed to repartition etc.... NT can format as fat16 (to a max of 4Gig), and to as ntfs4 (well in excess of 4Gig.). Note: if a fat16 partition/logical-drive formatted via NT3x/4x is to be accessible etc. from dos/'9x then it cannot be larger than 2Gig; dos/'9x can only handle/access fat16 to a max of 2Gig.

Reply: (edit)Found it ! Sysinternals FAT32 for NT4: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/fat32.shtml Site says it is read only ... guess what; it writes also ! Full access to FAT32 partitions. Only irritation is it runs chkfat32 on every boot (slows down boot a couple seconds) and no way to shut that off. Right click on a FAT32 partition and check properties ... it says FAT32. Use 9x to make the FAT32's of course. Best

Reply: (edit)That freebie version now writes as well??? Must dash over and get it... - before they change their mind??? Incidentally a couple of more years back a chap posted an excellent route to setting up '98/NT4; viz http://www.computing.net/windowsnt/wwwboard/forum/3279.html It ain't the only way, but it works, is well laid out etc; a good model to follow. If you were to include a common shared data area then it/they would ideally be fat16 (2Gig limits) as this/they would not require any add-in fat32 utils for NT. Also one would be wise to put all fat32 areas at the end of the drive physically (at least according to M$ etc.).

Reply: (edit)El-Trucha: Can you explain how - since NT3x/4x do not use fat32 and thus cannot see it without an add-in util - at least according the M$/the gurus and just about anybody else who uses nt3x/4x???

Reply: (edit)Works for me too, 14 desktops, 2gig C: with NT4 and 8gig D: running on FAT32. It does read them, but they were unstable. After about a month, i got a "system memory dump" on one. Quickly did a "convert" on the others, but it DID read it! _________________________ Computers work with absolute flawless perfection, until the first person touches them!
