Are you sure your boss knows what he's talking about?

Some programs require write privileges to the C drive in order to work.

How will the users execute programs if they have only read permissions?

i think he knows, the computer is for student to access internet and teacher to play video or powerpoint, and i need to prevent student or teacher to write some hacker program and virus to the computer, so it only need to set a read permission on c:\.

Don't share the C:\Drive itself. Simply create a folder on the drive or create a logical partition with a new drive letter (anything you wish, up to Z). Save the powerpoint files to that folder or drive, set it as a shared resource and map each PC to it from the command line. If the Server has an internet connection all you need is a Proxy program (and a Firewall for security). Locally configure the browser on each PC that will access the internet with the IP addr of the server or connect to each remotely and configure them yourself.

You might need to create a local group with access rights to the shared resource and a global group to be added to the local group. Post back with your results.

I repeat: users cannot work properly with only Read permissions on C. Some programs and files REQUIRE write permission.

Changing the C: permissions to read only will not accomplish what you want to achieve. You'll need to do permission changes and Registry hacks to do this, but you need to supply more details about the systems. ie, what programs are installed, is Internet access required, etc..

the computer have the following software:

OS: Winnt 4.0 workstation
Application:
Office 97, word, powerpoint, excel, Realplayer, norton antivirus....something like this
Internet access:
Cat-5 cable with single domain controller and with proxy to the public internet.

btw, i have a question after seeing jennifer's message. the computer is just for open some powerpoint and for student to do some word, and all their work is just save to the home folder which is on the server, actually they shouldn't have any chance to write anythings to c:, and i don't think(but not sure) that the opening of powerpoint and word will need to write things to c:, So please give me some advise........

Thanks alot,
Kenneth

Thank you for acknowledging my advice but I'm curious to know why you feel my scheme won't work? NT gives an administrator control over users access and usage to network resources, but you knew that already. I could be wrong but I think you might be overcomplicating the request. Is your boss an IT person? Probably not so they are trusting you to implement this request. As an admin you should already have an idea about what to do. However, since nobody has all the answers posting for help is always helpful, or at least should be.

What went through your mind when the request was first made?
