You've already been here:

http://e-www.motorola.com/products/softmodem/support/software.html#DFwinNT

...and downloaded what you know to be the appropriate driver for NT?

Go here:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q142/6/42.asp?FR=0

...and scroll down to the section that's entitiled:

"Plug and Play ISA Device Installation and PNPISA.SYS"

Follow the directions for installing PNPisa.sys You right click on the file when you locate it on the NT 4.0 CD, then select "Install."

I'm not gonna take the time to review every step, since I'm not even remotely familiar with the modem you're describing.

But post another reply on this same thread and let me (and the other blokes) know whether you've made any progress, or whatever other details we need to know.

I cannot get any 'WinModems' to work in NT, since NT is not plug and play, it needs a hardwired com port via jumpers. You should be able to figure out if this modem is a WinModem.

Dear you must need a seprate driver for Motorola SM56 PCI modem its not any (*.inf) file its a (*.exe) file or may be some other application which create a port for your modem and then install the particular driver for you.

I have recently purchased an SM56PCI internal MODEM. I have a problem connecting to the internet. My ISP is HCL Infinet (dial up - 172516). The problem is that once it finishes negotiating connection, it sends and receives about 300 bytes of data and subsequently disconnects. The MODEM helper program correctly states that it transiently connects at 46333 bps and disconnects. I have tried using a MODEM string setting of AT&FX1S10=255 but in vain. Modem diagnostics can communicate with MODEM and says it's installed at COM4 etc.. I also tried installing COM ports with Install New Hardware upto COM4 but MODEM preempts COM4 and converts COM4 to COM5 instead. I did however notice that the MODEM's system requirements state that it needs 256KL2 cache, but a Celeron has only 128KL2 cache. Nevertheless, my dealer says he has sold umpteen number of Celerons with the same internal MODEM which work. I also have to mention that only if I uncheck Allowed protocols section's NetBEUI and IPX/SPX, I can progress so far to connecting to Internet, otherwise, it dials, negotiates but doesn't even connect for a while. I have also tried changing the slot to slot 1 and slot 3 but to no avail.

I am in a dilemma because I cannot figure out what else could be causing the problem. I would be greatly indebted to you if you could troubleshoot my problem.

Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
Sachin.

System configuration :
Intel Celeron 850MHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB Seagate Barracuda, Jetway 618AF Intel 815E chipset motherboard. Windows 95 ver 4.00.950 B with IE 5 installed.

MODEM query ATI3 : SM56 PCI Rel. 5.00 AD04 Build 83.20.1

N.B. : I have tried all combinations of settings in Dialup Networking in vain. Phone dialer also does not work. I have also tried the AT%B9 modem string.
