I'm trying to follow some instructions for setting up an HP LaserJet 4M that is on our network. The printer is already setup on an old NT 3.51 server which we are phasing out, so I want to set it up on the new 4.0 server (stand alone).
My instructions say i'll need the IP address of the printer - how do I find that?
Thanks
You should just be able to ADD NETWORK PRINTER
find the name of the server.... double click
the printer should appear... Highlight it, then OK to add.
Response 1 won't work, as the old NT server is being phased out... What you should do is go to the old NT server and from the printer applet select the desired printer and then select properties. The port number will be list (if it uses IP) You should also note that when using IP on most printers the port description is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx PASSTHRU
Unfortunately, the old server won't display printer properties - what now? I have a client set up to print from the new server, but it gets a "incorrect access code" message...
I've tried pinging the printer name, and get nothingWhat now?
If the old NT uses an IP address to get to the printer, than can you go to the printer and print a test page and it should show the IP address. We have a HP 5si and it has a IP address statically assigned to the printer.
Otherwise when you set up the printer on the new system you can set it up to have DHCP assign it a IP address...
Hope this helps...
The printer will only have an IP address as such if it has a network card installed or is connected to an external print server. In this case get the IP address from a test page. If it hasn't do what T-1 said.
I misread your post. If you are physically connecting the printer to your new NT4 server, it shouldnt be asking for an IP address. Make sure you are choosing "local" when installing. It usually only ask for IP if your trying to install a printer connection to Print server.
