Subject: How to clone from RAID SCSI to IDE? |
Comment: Hello, I have a Window NT 4.0 workstation machine running service pack 6. I have two SCSI drives (10 Gig each) in a RAID 1 configuration using a MegaRaid SCSI PCI controller card. We have had numerous problems with this config (dont ask) so we are moving to a single IDE drive (20 Gigs). How can I clone the C: drive (RAID config as listed above - it has two NTFS partitions only) to the newly added G: drive (20 gig IDE). I have tried using ghost, but it does not work - error messages galore - and in fact symantec states they do not support it either. Any other methods for doing this or tools out there? Thanks in advance for your help! --Tim

Reply: (edit)Tim: I don't think this is possible. I use PowerQuest "Drive Image" and "Drive Copy" but neither will clone from a two scsi hard drive Raid setup. Even copying from a single scsi hard drive to an IDE hard drive is a b--ch! The mounting points are different and you must change the boot.ini file. I think you need to do a clean install of NT on your IDE hard drive.

Reply: (edit)One way around this would be to install a temp NT OS on the 20GB IDE drive (or another IDE drive). Have that IDE drive boot first, load the drivers for the SCSI controller, copy the data over from the SCSI RAID to the 20 GB drive. Alternatively, backup the SCSI RAID data and start a fresh.
