I feel like such a shmuck! Never backed up my boot ini and now cant remember proper entry for dos ...if you have the option to boot into c:\dos..what's your entry say..so's i can fix mine? It got replaced by something else by a failed install of a different dos, and tho i can boot into dos with system commander, the option on my nt selector now lists an invalid choice, unfortunately i cant put it back the way it was as i never backed it up!
thanx

Here's a copy of the boot.ini of my server, bear in mind that it's NT4 TSE but the DOS line should be the same.
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WTSRV
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WTSRV="Windows Terminal Server Version 4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WTSRV="Windows Terminal Server Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos
C:\ = "MS-DOS"

hmmm,thanks, but somehow i remember changing what was in the brackets to "windows for workgroups", i recall there was an actual statement afterwards that led the boot loader to the correct file..have you actually booted into dos with that line? everything above the 'ms-dos' statement is still nt stuff...
thanks for the response tho...maybe it just wants to find "c:\"
ill give it a go....

I took a look on another server that has DOS 6.2 on the C: and the last line of boot.ini is the same as above i.e.
C:\="MS-DOS"
I have never bothered trying to boot into DOS but I assume that it would look for the io.sys file to start booting MS DOS

That is correct. It is the C:\ that says go find io.sys and msdos.sys at the root of c:
What comes after the "=" is just a description and doesn't matter.
Depending you may have c:\bootsect.dos instead of just c:\
