i have installed graphics drivers for a certain video card by mistake and now my NT system boots up to a bunch of vertical lines on the screen. Is there a safe mode I can go into and restore the VGA settings?

Boot to VGA mode and you can correct the problem that way.

Ah - unfortunately, I tried that and the same messed up display was there. Any further advice?

One doesn't. There is no Safe Mode in NT4

OK, here's the deal - with hindsight, I had to install NT4 service pack 3 or higher for this graphics card to work.
