According to M$, you need at least 128Meg RAM for XP - general concensus is preferably a minimum of 256 and 512+ is better.

Also laptop may not be XP compliant.. drivers various may be required to run XP.

The laptop as is will run NT Workstation/Server; '98/ME; and with at least 128Meg will run W2K - but (as with XP) more is nicer... But would be wise to check with IBM web-site re' what the laptop will handle, also for what drivers etc. are available for assorted OS.

If drive has a single partition only then use a '98 bootdisk (Fdisk util) to remove the partition; then reconfigure drive for whatever OS you intend to use.

It "may" be that you have set screen display options to high...? Right click on the blank part of the (rather small) desktop and go to properties; there you should be able to see the tab to you allow to change display settings. Set it to the 640 x whatever it is setting and this "may" produce a larger image...? It will offer to test the setting for you; if you wish to return to the current settings do not do anything but allow it to time out and return automatically. If that doesn't resolve it for you then...

I suggest first you get the drivers necessary for the laptop to run 98. Perhaps visit IBM web-site (suppport) and look for any drivers for '98 - including vga drivers.

Then start afresh; i.e. reformat the drive/partition and re-install '98, supplying drivers as needs be along the way.

Also there is no need to use CAPITAL LETTERS when posting - in the whole post. This is considered to be shouting... It's also not so easy to read... Better (good form...) to use the normal lower case - with capitals as normally appropriate.
