I am wondering if anyone knows if there is an API call or something that can be setup in Windows NT 4.0 where the system can be made to proactively communicate files that have changed.

I have a system that includes a couple thousand directories with a few hundred files in each one. Very few of the files change on a daily basis, but currently to back them up I have to go through each individual file and test it's last update date against the date and time the last backup process began. That takes over 25 minutes currently. I would like for the system to either write the names of changed files to a log or call a program whenever a file is changed so it can be backed up immediately so I can have a running backup.

Ever heard of a differential backup?

ntbackup can do this automatically instead of you manually doing it.

Yes, a differential backup is what I am doing. Only the backed up files are compressed and encrypted and electronically sent off site. But I am spending a lot of system resources checking last modification dates on files. I am looking for some type of logging capability where the system would keep a running log of the files that have changed so instead of checking the time stamps on thousands of files I can just compress and encrypt the ones that appear in the log.
