Is there a hierarchical chain of NTFS file and directory permissions ? For example, in order to have "Full Control" of a sub-directory does a user or group have to have "Full Control" of all the directories above it in the tree ?

IN NT, no. When the directory is created, it inherits the rights one time from its parent. But once you change it, the parent effects it no longer.

In 2K, you have inherited rights that stay with the directory unless you turn off inheritance.
