Hi,

I am running a network with NT servers, and NT workstations on Celeron 1.4ghz, 256mb Ram.

Recently on several PCs(not All) I have been getting the following symptoms...They seem to occur mainly when maximising, minimising or changing between IE windows, but has also occured at other times

- Desktop will flash blank and then re-appear with icons all muddled up, including using icons from files only stored in C drive folders
- taskbar icons in the RHB corner will dissapear, all except for VNC icon.
- All the icons sitting in the startmenu bar at the bottom of the screen will resort

When it happens everything still works fine, but means all the virus scanning s/ware is stopped! SO a reboot is needed.

Somebody suggested it was to do with the c:\temp file permissions, but I have looked at this and see no problems. "System" has full control, and "everyone" full or as good as.

When looking in event viewer it says "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted." with the source being winlogon. No other errors are recorded in Dr Watson or the like.

Nor have I installed any new software/patches recently, with the exception of the blaster patch.

If anybody can help, please do!!!

We have seen this problem on W2K Pro, after putting on SP4. Just today we are trying this: renaming c:\winnt\explorer.exe to some other name, then doing a reboot and letting the system recreate explorer.exe...(you will have to end the explorer.exe service so that you can rename the executable). Another alternative is to copy an explorer.exe from a PC that is working OK to the PC that is not working OK. Good luck!
