The problem:
Exchange 5.5 running on NT4 box.
It was put on a small partition some time ago i.e. on an 10GB drive. NOT ME!
The database has reached 8GB on the D:\ partition and there is NOTHING left !!!

There is only 70MB free space free on the C:\ partition.

Now I’m looking for a quick cheap but clean solution to the problem as Exchange keeps crashing, amazing it’s running at all.

I have a 2nd Drive with 26GB free space. F:\

Can I use partition magic to join C: and D: Yes I would say, but not really worth the effort with risking the O/S running short on disk-space anyway! + would Exchange like the drive letter changing etc… ?

There is nothing else on the D:\ partition to clear off, just Exchange!

I do have a 2nd Server, but I’ve been unable to get hold of a module so I can't use Backup Exec to backup the 2nd Server **great**

So I want to move it to the F:\ drive

Suggestions please, working ones thanx!

Urgent so any advice welcome ?

John

you might be able to just delete all the old log files in c:\progam files\exchsrvr\mdbdata.

I've had this with a customer too, where the log files built up quite quickly until they filled the server. First we knew was when they called to say their email wasn't working. The MTA service had stopped and wouldn't start till I freed up some space.

After I'd deleted the log files I created a batch file and set it to run once a week (using AT command) to delete any files named e0*.log.

CD\
CD "PROGRAM FILES"
CD EXCHSRVR
CD MDBDATA

DEL E0*.log -y

I can't answer your partitioning questions I'm afraid, I just know the above worked for me :0)

You can't merge the boot/system partition with any other.

If you want a serious solution I would suggest getting a much larger drive and using ghost. You can resize the partitions as you ghost the drive. Do not exceed 7.8gig for system/boot drive or you risk a nonbooting system.

I would also suggest mirroring your drives. Don't want to lose everything due to a drive loss now do you.

You can try compressing the databases..first stop ALL exchange services. Once that is completed...go to run and type cmd for a DOS box.

Here are the two commands:

eseutil /d ispriv

eseutil /d ispib

ispriv is defragging the priviate information store. ispib is defragging Public information store. The private could run two plus hours..please email me and let me know if this works. You can gain several gig back..Have you ever done this?

After integrity checking & defragmenting the information store.

Use Optimiser to move the Information store to the 26 Gig Drive.

Then you will not run out of disk space for a while.
