I am installing a PCMCIA LAN Card onto a Dell Latitude CPiA laptop but am getting an Event ID 36 error. The source is Serial. The Description is: "While validating that COM2 was really a serial port, the contents of the divisor latch register was identical to the interrupt enable and the receive register. The device is assumed not to be a serial port and will be deleted."

The Xircom LAN/Modem combo card device is removed by the system.

Any suggestions for resolving this problem?

Check bios, sometimes the serial port 2 is disabled in the bios.

No progress. The bios only has one port setting option - Serial Port and COM1 is assigned to it. I'm guessing that COM1 is used to interface with the floppy drive which is attached to the docking station.

I've concluded that the Dell System does not have a COM2 port. How can I add a port to the System? Adding a Port in Control Panel does not physically add a Port to the System.

Thanks.

Update your system BIOS from the newest update from Dell. If that did not work, then you also have to reapply SP3 this will rebuild your I/O ports. I had similar problem before and those have resolved by doing so.

I've discovered the problem. The PCMCIA port is not functioning properly. This is evident by the fact that when you select the PCMCIA utility, the Xircom card isn't identified (before the driver is even installed). Maker ID is completed during bootup by the HAL. If the maker/product, Xircom Modem Card in this case, is not identified after bootup, it is highly likely that the problem is not with the device but rather the motherboard or the port.
