I want to install WIN NT on as a dual boot with WIN 98. I am trying to convert a FAT32 partition to FAT using Partition Magic so that I can do this.
I have a 5.7Gb hard drive with only 1.7Gb used, yet it tells me it can't convert to FAT because there is not enought space.

Why will it not let me do this?? Is there any solution?

Thanks

FAT16 has a 2 gig partition limit, that's why you would get out of disk space errors.

You'll need to create multiple 2 gig partitions. Why would you want to convert to FAT16?

WIN NT won't install on a FAT32 partition.
Will it?

Nope NT will not install on FAT32 so you need to convert but Ian is right about the 2GB limit. Your best bet is to reformat the drive in FAT (2GB partitions) or NTFS and load NT first. Just remember that the first partition must be FAT for dual boot (50MB to 2GB).

I'm just curious, but can you have a FAT32 C: drive when trying to use NT? Doesn't it place it's boot records on the active drive?

I had a similar problem. I had win 98 on on HDD and I had upgraded to FAT 32. Now I want to load WIn NT Server as well. I could not do that since Win NT wont install on FAT 32. So I have had to buy a new drive (since I did not want to format my current drive) and format that as FAT16.

But guys, I am still having the same problem. I go through the full DOS part of the install and then it says that the install program does not recognise or cannot find the partition provided by me during the dos part of the install so it cant proceed. Why is that. First I thought it was due to the fact that my c: drive (primary drive) was FAT 32. So I disconnected my old drive and made the new FAT16 drive the primary master drive (c:). But I am still getting the same error and after going through the entire dos setup, making 3 floppies for setup, I get this error. HELP!!
