Computer Hardware

ASUS P2B-DS motherboard (Dual CPU Capable)
1 P II 450 MHz
128 MB SDRAM (100 MHz)
9.1 GB Quantum Viking II Ultra2 SCSI
Sound Blaster 128 (PCI)
Intel 740 AGP video card
Creative Labs PC DVD Encore with Dxr 2 decoder card (PCI)
LS-120 Drive (IDE)
US Robotics 56K modem (ISA)

I am trying to create a dual boot machine with Windows 98 and Windows NT server 4.0 (sp4). I have created only one partition for now, just to install the operating systems. This partition is only 2G and is fat 16. I can install Win 98 with no problems but when it comes to Win NT 4.0 it crashes. I tried reformatting the drive and just installing Win NT 4.0 on its own and it still crashes. It comes up with the ERROR: Inaccessible Boot Disk. The following is exactly what I am getting for an error;

Init: \System Root ( \ArcName\multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\$WIN_NT$.~BT
STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7413BD0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
INACCESIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

I have been told that some onboard IDE controllers are not compatible with the Windows NT Atapi.sys driver which is include on the Win NT Version 4.0. The problem was addressed in the Service Pack 4. I tried coping all of the I386 folder contents form the Service Pack 4 CD and pasting them into the I386 folder that I had copied to my disk drive before installation. This did replace many older files in that folder, however it still comes up with the error mentioned earlier.
I then tried disconnecting the LS-120 drive as well as the DVD (both IDE) but still had the same error.
I then tried connecting the 68-pin Ultra2 SCSI ribbon to the 68-pin Wide SCSI because the Windows NT 4.0 Server Disk did not have the Ultra2 drivers embedded in the installation process. This did nothing to change the error. NOTE: The motherboard has an onboard Adaptec AIC 7890AB chipset that supports fast(50-pin), wide(68-pin), and Ultra2(68-pin) SCSI connectors. I have been told to try an IDE hard drive but I fined it hard to believe that an Ultra2 SCSI drive like the 9.1 Quantum Viking II would be incompatible with NT. After all this type of drive is made to run top-of-the-line NT workstations.
I also disabled the USB ports in the BIOS since NT 4.0 does not support it but I really didn't expect this to solve my problem.......and of course it didn't. I also made a few changes to the motherboard jumpers to disable things like keyboard startup (start computer by pressing space bar).
I also thought about flashing the BIOS but I already have the latest BIOS version according to the specs on the ASUS home page. I have tried disabling many thing in the BIOS hoping to hit something that would change my luck.......but again the NT door was slammed in my face. I am getting aggravated with this new system. If anybody has any suggestions I would like to hear them.

Don't get scared, the following was actually quite succesfull:(except the networking on NT via my LT Win Modem won't work so far...)
1.Low level format if you please.
2.Fdisk partitioning from W'98 boot floppy.
Make at least 3 FAT16 partitions. Format 2 with W'98.( I know it souns silly, but the two FAT16 formats seem to be unequal)
Install the W'98 from CD (Boot sequence should be set "CD-ROM, whatever, ..."), if it force you to choose at startup, make it boot from CD-ROM.
3.Make full copy of this W'98 partition with Explorer (exept the page file-not allowed because it's in use) to other W'(* FAT16 partition. (Make sure the folder options is set to "Show All Files"!)
Boot to W'98 Boot Disk (Boot sequence should be set "A:, whatever, ...")copy the page file
to same place.
4.Install the Win NT4.0 from CD-ROM to remaining partition (Boot sequence should be set "CD-ROM, whatever, ...")..."), if it force you to choose at startup, make it boot from CD-ROM. When it giwes you installation choices choose format with FAT16, even if you before formated that partition with W'98 FAT16 by mistake.
5.Install full Servicepack 4 (76M download).
6.Take a look at your W'98. If it is no good,
reinstall it(see above).
7. If it gives you hard time reinstalling, just skip all the problems and restart NT.
Now copy allfiles from Win NT Explorer (Make sure the folder options is set to "Show All Files"!) from the other W'98 partition over the crashed W'98 installation.
p.s.: That's all folks! Hope it'll work for you. Not all above may be necessary for you, but try to keep it simple and just follow my silly looking intructions...and don't be aggravated if it won't work, just ask Bill to name "Doesn't Work (TM) and Why you wanna go (TM)" the new MS standards...
p.p.s: Please, e-mail me if it worked out!

Just install full version of Servicepack 4 (76MB File from MS dovnload site)
(best if you run two installations from main i386 folder and 3 from the separate folders for remaining products - at least you cad uninstall them later.)
And voila!, your new driver would come out of incognito(if you allredy installed it before,
or will install with no propblem if you do it later - beware of hi resolutions, they may still freez your screen with nothing or vertical stripes visible at certain situations( installing programs, browsing, ... well weird I know,...
God speed! - Pavol
p.s.:In case it will not work don't blame anybody, just ask Bill to make "Doesn't Work (TM) and Why you wanna go (TM)" the new MS standards...
p.p.s: Please, e-mail me if it worked out for you!

I found out what my problem was. Usually Generic SCSI drivers for ADAPTEC are embeded into the installation process of NT 4 however I have an Ultra2 SCSI drive and I had to specify this driver. The problem was that I couldn't reach the point where NT asked me to install other drivers. I called ASUS tech. support and they told to hit F6 when NT setup screen came up. This gave me the chance to install the Ultra2 SCSI driver for my hard drive.
