Comment: Help I have a reoccuring problem with one user. She runs NT 4 W/S SP4, when useing word she keeps getting a Dr Watsons error Winword.exe access violation (0xe0000005) address: 0x0000005c. It happens either straight away or after a few mins/hours. She then looses her work. We have replaced Normal.dot several times which fixes the problem for a short time, but it comes back....Any Ideas !

Reply: (edit)Alas, the same thing is happening to me, and the useless information services dept at my law firm doesn't have a clue. We just installed NT on our system, and I was so frustrated with this problem that I was doing my own web search on it, which is how I found your note. If you ever get a helpful response, can you please forward it to me?? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Check the Dr. watson32.txt located in the c:\winnt folder. This it a text file that gives you the cause and addresses to certain errors. The newest error will be placed at the end of the file. Half way through you will get a list of addresses with the word FAULT and an arrow. This is the .dll that has failed. Then compare the .dll of the clients that are not working to a .dll that is working. If there is a diiference just replace it.

Reply: (edit)We had a bunch of users having this problem. It turned out to be that there was a word97 macro virus (ethan.a) on the PC. After we cleaned the Hard Drive everything was fine. Sounds Like you're having the same problem because when you create a new Normal.dot the problem goes away for a while. Probably until you reinfect yourself. You can test by Deleting the Normal.dot. Open Word to create a new Normal.dot then make it Read only. Then when you open a file that is infected and try to close it, you'll receive a message that you are unable to update your Global Template or something like that. Then you'll Know that a virus was trying to write to your Normal.dot. Good Luck.

Reply: (edit)Running NT4 SP6A this is profile specific. Whilst logged in as user who has the problem, run Regedit. Go to hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\8.0\word Delete the data key. This solves the problem - until the next time...
