Subject: DHCP won't start automatically on boot
Comment:

Our server is a NT 4.0 server with service pack 6. It is PDC, DHCP, WINS, etc. Everything has been working fine for about 2 years or something like that. All of a sudden it has stopped DHCP and I have to manually start it after each reboot. I have added a batch file (net start "microsoft dhcp server")in the startup folder to do this for me, but I'm not suppossed to have to do this. Any ideas why it would just stop for no reason and not start back unless i tell it to?

Thanks
Daniel Wood

Have you check your DHCP Client under Services in your control panel. It should be automatic.
Hope this helps.

Have you checked your EVENT VIEWER and see if there are any error messages.

Might wnat to start there. Also you might to reinstall Service Pack 6. If you are going to isntall the Service Pack, you might as well isntall Service Pack "6a". It is the latest Microsoft has put out. I have heard rumblings of a Service Pack 7, but it has not come out yet.

i checked the event viewer and it says:

"the microsoft DHCP server service failed to start due to the following error: the specified service does not exist as an installed service"

this doesnt make any sense, because it has been working for over a year and i haven't even touched the server in months!

any suggestions?

thanks

That's what i call ''Microsoft HeadAche Upgrade... The best thing to do is to remove all DHCP services on your server and to make sure, re-install Service Pack 6. I realy can't explain why it crashed.
