Subject: Determine RAID configurationsOS: Win NT/2000CPU/Ram: varies |
Comment: I have a bunch of servers on my network. I can reach them all through PCAnywhere. I have been asked to list each server, the number of physical drives it has on it, and how they are configured (RAID?) How do I find this information out? I know I can go to disk administrator and see how many hard drives, but I'm lost with all the RAID stuff?

Reply: (edit)You can easily see in Disk Administrator if you are doing software raid and what level of raid. Hardware raid is another story. Unless you have the hardware raid utility loaded on the server or can install a utility that can tell you about your hardware raid configuration you are out of luck.

Reply: (edit)Where a true 'hardware' RAID is installed you can get into the firmware during boot-up. Reboot the server and monitor the display carefully, you should see prompts for access SCSI BIOSes and RAIDs as it goes along. Once you have got into the RAID firmware BE careful that you don't initialise the RAID - you will wipe everything. Look for the RAID configuration option and you should be able to display how it's set up. Usually its either RAID 1 with pairs of identical drives mirroring or RAID 5 which has at least 3 drives and the data is strpied across them in such a way that if ONE drive fails all of the data is still visible and accessible.
