OK, this is going to be rather long...
The problem: In our network, every time anyone logs on, the desktop wallpaper they had set before logging off disappears to show simply a colored background. This isn't the end of the world, but not a week goes by that I don't get asked about it.
The reason: Our server room uses KVM sitches to enable one Keyboard/Monitor/Mouse to be used for any one of several servers. One of these servers is my webserver.
So that I could tell at a glance when my server was the active machine, I installed a simple graphic as the desktop image that read "WEBSERVER". The boss liked this idea so much he wanted me to do that for all the machines.
Well, since we all log on at one time or another using our own usernames, I had to try to come up with a way to have all servers dipslay a common desktop to all users. (I only wanted to affect admins working on the servers)
I searched MS's KnowledgeBase and found a way to make this happen. Or so I thought. All I really accomplished is the aforementioned problem. I now can't find the KB article that described how to do it, and it has been a long time since this all started (I had more important things to do for quite some time).
Can anyone help me out of this predicament?
We have a 500 user network running WinNT on the servers (and Win2000 on the workstations). I am not a SysAdmin, and thus don't know enough about PDCs and BDCs and such to figure this out on my own. I do, however, have Admin priviledges and I'm a pretty smart guy.
We tried reversing what we had done, but that no worky. One of our "real" Admins (who helped me screw this up and now disavows any involvement) suggested this: that simply undoing what we had done wasn't solving the problem because the PDC wasn't syncing with the BDC. I say say "real" in quotes because he has no formal training and will often try to baffle you with bull****, and I think that may be what's happening with his PDC/BDC explanation.
Bottom line is two questions:
1) How can I stop users from losing their desktops?
2) How can I accomplish the original goal of having each server dipslay its name using a common desktop for all users? If anyone can help me with this, I promise to name my next born child after you. (Of course, I am 58 so that may not be much of a promise!)

Have you tried using Policy editor?
you will find it in windows nt.
It will allow you to say what background is used for every user, some users or just one.
After you make the policy save it on the server in the folder "C:\winnt\system32\repl\import\scripts"
that folder should be shared as "NETLOGON"
You want to name the policy file ntconfig.pol.If you are confused send me an e-mail
enjoy
David
