Making a Bootable CD

If you want to make a data CD from which you can boot your system, see Making a Bootable CD .

I use msn messenger, contact me
What is a Bootable CD?

A bootable CD is a disc that contains a bootable imagean ISO 9660 file that is an exact representation of a floppy or hard drive from which you can boot your system.
Easy CD Creator implements the El Torito standard which was developed by Phoenix Technologies and IBM and specifies a bootable CD-ROM format.

Uses for Bootable CDs

Bootable CDs are useful for making a backup copy of your customized system configuration and using that CD to re-create your system if necessary.

Tips for Making a Bootable CD

You can create a bootable CD the same way as you would create a bootable floppy disk for your working environment. Easy CD Creator reads boot information from a floppy disk and writes that information to a BOOTIMG.BIN file on the CD. Easy CD Creator supports the following floppy disk formats:

n 1.2 MB

n 1.44MB

n 2.88MB

How to Make a Bootable CD

To make a bootable CD, follow these steps:

1 Insert the source bootable floppy disk into your floppy disk drive.

2 Select CD Layout Properties from the File menu.

3 Click the Data Settings tab.

4 Select the ISO 9660 from the File System option.

5 Select Bootable CD-ROM. ISO 9660

An international standard that specifies how data is physically recorded on to the CD (sector-by-sector) into a directory tree (up to eight directories). CD-ROMs made according to the ISO 9660 specifications can be read on multiple operating systems such as Macintosh, DOS, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

6 Follow the procedures in How to Make a Data CD.

When Easy CD Creator begins writing files and folders to your blank CD, two files are at the root directory of your CD layout: BOOTCAT.CIN and BOOTIMG.BIM.

Scott Muellers Notes - PAGE 764 Chapter 13 Eleventh EDITION

The minimum requirements for a bootable:

1. A system in which the CD Rom can be disignated as the boot drive

2. A CD-R / CDRW drive (you'll use CD-R media in either case)

3. Mastering software that allows the creation of a bootable CD

4. A Floppy disk containing your operating system boot files (note: you'll need to add the CD-Rom drivers to the disk or verify the that the win 98 startup disk will work with your CD-ROM

ATAPI/IDE Drives are bootable
--------------------------------------
Most ATAPI/IDE drives connected to a motherboard IDE interface can be used as a bootable device if the BIOS permits it. If your CD-ROM is connected to a sound card this procedure won't work. If your CD-ROM is connected to an SCSI interface, you'll need an SCSI interface with a BIOS chip that permits booting, as well as a bootable CD.

Here's a quick test to see whether your system can handle treating IDE/ATAPI CD as a bootable device:

1. Place a data CD into your CD-ROM drive
2. Start your computer
3. Enter the bios setup program
4. Go to the appropiate screen & select CD-ROM as first boot device
5. Select first hard disk (a.k.a. C:) as a second boot device
6. Exit BIOS setup & save changes.
7. On computer restart
