You could use a product such as pcanywhere using a direct cable to cable connection to copy files from one to the other.

I would like to connect my Dell Inspiron 7500 to my HP Pavilion 6470Z for sharing files and to back up both on each other. Both are 12gig HDs. I have a laplink serial cable DB25(F)& DB9(F) to DB25(F)& DB9(F). Laplink and DOS compatible. 1. Do I have the right cabling? 2. Do I need software or to insert a card? I am at Level 1 in computer literacy. Thanks for your help.

It's possible to connect the cd drive from your pc directly onto your laptop's motherboard. Open your laptop up and plug in an eide cable with two output slots into your motherboard where your hard drive is plugged in (you can get one of these cables from inside your dektop computer). Plug one of it's outputs into the hard drive and one into the cd drive from your desktop (make sure that the jumper settings on the back of one of the cd drive is set to 'slave').
Now start up your laptop. You will need to copy 'mscdex.exe' and 'cdrom.sys' from your desktop to your laptop using a floppy disk.
Now edit your autoexec.bat and config.sys files in the c:\ directory of your laptop and insert the lines which contain references to 'mscdex.exe' and 'cdrom.sys' (these references should be the same as those in the autoexec.bat and config.sys files on your desktop) Your laptop should now be able to read from the cdrom.

Is there a way to connect a laptop to a desktop and use that laptop as the desktops monitor and keyboard?
