Computer freezes on startup

A friend just did an automatic update and now when she starts up the computer freezes at the background picture. THere is nothing else on the screen. OS is XP Pro Ram 512mb cpu athlon 1.7g. Have tried starting in safe mode and system restore but nothing has helped. ANy suggestions??
