Hi,
I am unable to get my Actiontec PCI Call waiting modem to install correctly in Windows NT4.0 ServPck 6.
It works fine under Win98 on the same system.
The modem installer only looks at COM1 and COM2 to find a modem and does not find one. I then choose the modem manually and install driver provided on the modem disk. It asks for a COM port to install it to and I chose COM1 somewhat randomly (COM2 doesn't work either). Subsequently, modem properties indicate the modem being on COM4. Dial up networking is unable to dial out using this modem.
The modem does not show up under resource listings (IRQ and I/O) using the diagnostics tool.
Plug-and-Play service is started and so is modem device.
I am not sure what is going on, but on Linux, I would first run a utility to configure the PnP modem and then use. I am not sure what to do here!
Thanks for any help!!

First, go to the control panel. Open modem properties, remove any and all modems that are installed. Then open up Ports and again remove everything in there. That should be everything thing, but if you know of some hardware using a com port, remove the drivers for it as well.
Now reboot... Upon restart, some of the drivers should be re-installed automatically. If you hmust re-install anything manually, try installing the modem drivers first, then anything else you need to. Now check the com port your modem is using. Hopefull that little trick removed any unused com ports and put your modem on a lower one. If not, email me with some more info on your system and I'll try to help.

I had the same problem. 98 woked but not NT. Its a little wierd but after uninstalling the modem and setting the PC's bios to defaults,
it would then pick up the modem on com4. NT didn't like the original interupt settings. After that the modem worked fine with both
OS's

Try to install pnpisa from drvlib/i386 (I think), just right click in explorer, and choose install. Reset the machine and it will ask for drivers. (watch out for IRQ conflicts, always choose configuration and see if no RED cross over I/O address and IRQ). (Remove the old driver first).

I think you should check the directory that contains the NT driver and look if there's a setup file...just run the setup file and it will do everything for you.....i had the same problem like you and after looking at the file manually in the folder i realised that there was a setup file...and after double clicking it...it installed the necessary files to their relative directory and configured everything....and after restarting...the modem relays started kicking.

I am trying to install an external modem on my server running NT Server 4.
When RAS goes to detect the modem it finds it, queries it and then an error message pops up "Windows NT was unable to register the modem" on COM2".
Please respond if you have come across this, and can resolve it.
