First, what is the best way to test COM 1 and COM 2 in NT. I believe they are dead, but how do I check properly. Is there a device manager in NT like in 9x?

There are Devices and Ports applets in Control Panel. If your COM port shows in Ports NT recognises it, then test it in Hyperterminal. Also NT has Diagnostics which shows IRQs for your devices. You might see Serial in front of Ports. Good luck
