After running scans on an NT server, I noticed a lot of ports that I am not using. How do I close these ports? Does closing a port basically mean that I need to remove the application that uses it?

The best advice is to make sure that you have all of the service packs and patches from microsoft installed. Also make sure that all of your local security policies are configured properly. If your machine is connected directly to the internet make sure that you have a firewall program installed and only open ports through the firewall that require it. Some examples of necessary ports are:

IIS5.0 Web Server - Port-80
Mail Server pop - port-110
Mailserver smtp - port-25
FTP server - ftp - port-21

Be careful with manually disabling ports because a lot of ports in Windows NT are used by the software to communicate internally with each other. I've included a link that may help you to better secure your server. Just copy the link and paste into your browser.
