I need to reconfigure our Server from a PDC to a member server of an existing domain. What would be the simplest way of acheiving this ?

You have to re-install NT! No way around it....so backup and restore. Good Luck!

Yup, You can Promote and demote. You CAN NOT go from PDC or DBC to Member server or Vice Versa. Why don't you just Demote it, if you no longer need it as a PDC (an options if you don't want to reinstall)
