Have you tried writing to the CD?

I can`t. The computer just says there is no disk in the drive. It`s hooked up correctly, but it won`t see any CD`s.

What software are you using to write data to the CDs?

“CD-ROM, DVD and Read-Write Devices: CD-ROM drives offer a low cost way to read data files and load software onto your computer. CD-RW drives, also known as CD burners, offer the user a way to create their own custom CDs. DVD-ROM drives allow users to enjoy DVD video and sound on their computer. CD-RW/DVD combination drives offer the capabilities of both CD burning and DVD viewing. DVD-RW drives come in a variety of formats including +RW, -RW and double layer write capacity. These drives offer the user a way to create their own custom DVDs. Pay particular attention to purchasing the appropriate blank media (discs) for the type/format of drive in your computer.”

To do the above, you need some software, such as “Easy CD Creator - Roxio.” There are other brands. Some of the older CD-ROMs are not able to burn a CD. Has your CD-ROM ever burned a CD? Is your computer able to read a CD that is furnished with software that you buy? Such as Windows NT, Quicken, etc. You said it worked fine. Doing what?

coffee is exactly right. If your machine doesn't have a CD Burner, then you won't be able to copy data to a CD, even if you obtain the burning software.

What model Dell do you have, and/or what does the drive say on the front of it?

Jennifer SUMN:
The CD-ROM drive is from a new dell. I have no clue what the computer manufacturer is.
It doesn`t say on the front.
