hi
i recently decided i wanted to reformat my NT workstation, and make it into a Windows 98 SE workstation. when i come to boot up on a floppy, and get on to the MS DOS prompt, i type in C: and press enter, and it comes up with
invalid drive specification
does anyone know what could be causing this, because i have formatted the HDD before, while it had NT on it because i had a few problems with it.
Thanx for help in advance
G

Possibly the drive (or at least c: ) is ntfs format?
Boot with either a dos/'98 boot-disk and run Fdisk; inspect partitions. If c: = ntfs it will show up a non-DOS. If only ntfs in Primary partition (NOT in extended areas) then Fdisk can remove it; after-which reconfigure drive afresh for '98.
If ntfs in Extended areas, then Fdisk will NOT remove it. Either: remove Extended area ntfs via NT Disk Admin and then close out, reboot with dos/'9x floppy, and use Fdisk to clean out drive etc...; or download/use delpart.exe util (from NT3.1 RK). This util will remove just about any partition - permanently. Add it to a dos/'98 boot-disk and run at the a:>\ prompt; follow on-screen prompts...

Regardless of what drive format is, you would be wise to run Fdisk and remove/delete all partitions, then reconfig afresh - with the awareness of Fdisk limits re ntfs partitions as outlined above.

Also wise(r) to have both Primary and Extended partitions; Primary for OS/apps/utils, and Extended for data? This safeguards data in event of a crash of OS etc in Primary; allows re-installs (even reformat of Primary) c: without affecting data in Extended - unless one is a little careless...
