Can't print from DOS

I have a Lexmark E310 laser printer attached locally to LPT1. Printing from windows is fine but I can't print through any dos based apps. I went into EDIT through a command prompt and tried to print but that didn't work either. If I map a drive to a network printer using the NET USE command, I can print from DOS that way, but not locally. If I do map LPT1 to another printer on the network, I can't print anything from Windows until I delete the NET USE command. I've moved the printer to another computer and attached it locally to LPT1 and printing from DOS and windows works fine. I've tried different parallel cables but that didn't work either. Something is buggered with this NT workstation and I can't seem to figure it out.
