Are you booting from CD?

Did you partition & format the 80GB HD?

If so, how?

i would suggest trying to get a copy of win2k from a friend. it is windows NT plus windoze 98. it would have been called NT version 5.0, but microsoft decided that they should make their best os that they ever made avalible for home use aswell as busness use.

pheonix991 - actually if you look at a win2K box on a network froma server, it is called nt5. As for the post, why not go ahead and put XP on it, the system specs are high enough?
Mechanix2Go - a NT4 CD isn't bootable, you can only boot with the 3 floppies

To answer the original question I believe your problem lies in that you have an unsupported Motherboard Chipset:

"Intel-Desktop 845GVSR"

You will need to run W2K minimum to get full support for this architecture.

Also having a large amount of memory may also cause problems without SP6A, thats progress!!

hiho-if yours is bootable then it was created custom using nero or another burner sw and not from MS as nt4 didnt come bootable from MS

Hi Miguel,

That's why I asked what I asked in #1.

It doesn't matter whether the NT CD will boot or not. Though it's interesting historical, folklorical stuff.

It *DOES* matter whether or not you have a useable partition.
s
You can partition FAT16, format and sys with DOS 5+ and copy the i386 to HD, then run winnt.

Actually why not use FAT16 4GB partition ??

2GB is pretty useless by the time NT4 has been updated to SP6/IE6/Security Updates.

PTS-DOS2000 will format to 4GB, actually found a download here for a boot floppy:

Hi hiho,

I don't know about 'pretty useless'.

I have DOS and w2k SP3 on a 2GB with my music player, burner, imaging, Turbo C, Turbbo C++, Office 97, Apache, and about a dozen other apps too boring to list.

Anyway, the method I suggested, for about the 100th time, is so simple you'd hardly get it wrong.

And as long as you stick to plain-vanilla partitions, when it goes pear shaped [it will], you can get at it with simple tools.

Quite agree with the KISS principle.

Though the original question was about the MoBo CHIPSET which is unsupported in NT4.

The poster has not reponded so it is all conjecture as in this similar post:

Hi Danny,

No offense but you might want to go a little easy on the ASAP and read more acrefully.

This:

www.bootdisk.com

is a web address. Since it's not clickable, you need to paste [or type] it into the loaction bar.

Not sure which is older.

You should try to get somebody with some experience there next to you.

NT is not all that easy to deal with.

If you can not get a helper there you should start a new thread and list EXACTLY what hardware & software you have and what has beem dome so far.

Good luck
