Hi, Anybody can help me out about my problem in installing win nt workstation 4.0 to P4 pc with 120 Gb hdd and P4(505). This is a new PC that had XP on it I deleted all partitions and partitioned 2GB fat16 active partition. Tried installing from CD and 3 flopies both failed with the following stop message. Had to set debug to see the message as the computer kept rebooting without that. I then installed win98SE and connected to another computer running winnt 4.0 server which was setup to share the winnt installation files. I issued a winnt /b command and after the dos files were copied and computer reboots got the same stop message. Surely there must be a way to install nt on this machine. Perhaps I need a different HAL file. I know about hitting F5 to install one if I had a dirrernt one than the ones on the disk. The manufacture is no help. They say they only support the system which shipped (xp)
Whenever I got into the installation process I always endup with blue screen and show up this error:
I did read Q197667. The installation never gets far enought to worry about formatting the HD. It dies in the middle of Disk #2, right after loading FAT Files. In a normal installation the screen flicks to a NT screen and then continues in text mode. Mine blanks the screen and then reboots. After setting debug on it stops at that point and displays the stop message.
Get a 98 diskette containing fdisk and format. Run fdisk and remove all partitions.
Set your bios to boot the cdrom. Boot the NT cd via the bios. Install will start. Hit f6 when you see it in the lower left corner and feed it the ide contrller driver from a floppy diskette.
This should get you to the screen for partitioning the drive. Create a 4gig partition and format it ntfs.
Continue and complete install.
I suspect with this hardware you need a controller driver for NT to be able to address the disk. This is why you have been having a problem. Its trying to use a generic driver and it won't work.
Yes, I formated. It is fat16. I managed to find the answer to my problem. I have the Phoenix-Award BIOS and under the Advanced BIOS settings I discovered changing the max CPUID from disable to enable allowed me to install NT 4.0 Workstation on this machine. I then ran the sp6a upgrade. Everything runs ok. But, now there is a new and rather strange problem where the machine will not "restart". I must shutdown and press the poweer off button and then power on if I want to restart. Choosing restart from the shutdown menu leaves me hung on a screen with just the background on it. Strange. Hopefully the above BIOS change will help a couple of other folks I saw on this forum who have the same STOP message. Thanks for the responses.
