Comment:

I can't install WinNT on a PC running WinME. (I want a dual-boot)
I'm sure I'm leaving out an obvious step, but at this point I'm clueless.

Can anybody help me get to where I want to go today?

Thanks

Post 3279 on this forum details how to set it for NT/'98 should work equally well as NT/ME. It does presume you are wiling to start over...

It isn't the 'only' way to set it up but it does work well; credit to the chap who posted it originally.

Basic principle to bear in mind is that the active Primary partition (usually c: ) has to be a file format that 'all' installed M$ OS can read. This partition is where all installed M$ OS will deposit their respective boot/start-up files.

The only common format across all M$ OS = fat16. If there was no NT present, perhaps only W2K and '98/ME then it 'could' also be fat32' - although I personally still prefer fat16 in this latter case.

NT cannot see fat32 - hence the fat16 pre-requisite.

Typically a single HD 'might' resemble:

Primary (active partition):
c: = fat16 = 150-250Meg. = boot/startup files only.

Extended partition:
d: = 2-4Gig = fat16 = NTWS/NTSvr;
e: = 2Gig = fat16 = shared-data;
f: = ???Gig = fat32 = '98/ME;
g: = ???Gig = fat32 = '98/ME only data.

d: can go to ntfs later if you wish - but I'd leave it as fat16 unless you really need it ntfs.

M$ and the 'gurus' adivse that fat32 areas go after all non fat32 areas (physically) on the HD; also install any fat32 formatted OS after NT has been installed.

Remember to make the ERD for NT before installing '98/ME. This is because the '9x/ME family will overwrite/replace the NT boot-loader when they go in. The NT repair process allows you to restore the missing boot-laader - with/without the ERD (preferably with the ERD available)installing '98/ME.

If your ME is fat32 in C: you either have to start afressh with a HD reconfigured to accomodate the core conditions - outlined briefly above; or use the workaround provided courtesy of M$ and also John Savill FAQ's.

John Savills's FAQs at:

http://www.windows2000faq.com - installations section

covers it for NT/'98; it applies equally to NT/ME.

The actual item is at:

http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13902

Otherwise you are into using an add-in partition/boot-manager etc. to allow a second Primary for NT. NT would be in a Primary partition - that will be placed first physically on the HD - ahead of the current ME. Each OS will be totally isolated from the other and you cannot share data - unless it is in a common file format Extended partition/logical-drive accordingly

When using an add-in boot-manger to handle separate primaries the inactive primary is hidden from active; only the extended areas are visible to all OS... The add-in util allows you to select which primary, and thus which OS, to boot.

PM6x and later is a $$$'s/£££'s add-in util.

http://www.xosl.org;

http://www.osloader.com;

are a couple of freebies that get good reports.

Whichever way you go - especially if the add-in util route - read the manual first! They all have their own way of doing it.
