Comment:
running win nt4.0 server sp6a, having problems accessing home directory on server. when log in on clint using win nt 4.0 workstation sp6 or win 2000 I can find the server in network neigberhood but when try to open it i get a remote procedure call failure. home directory is shared with permissions for everyone as full control. Wins, DHCP running, RPC services, and RPC locater running, TCP/IP and have tried with and without NETBIOS running still no luck. I have no proplems connecting to shares on other workstations just connot connect to shares on domain server. Domain server is also PDC. any help would be much appriciated,
Need machine [netbios name] account and a user account. Perhaps one of the two is missing. You add the nt or wk2 wkst to the server by using server manager.
have both machine name and user account. wkst added to domain on wkst, checked in server manager and shows wkst's, i can log into domain but cannot access the shares on the domain itself.
By "Home" directory do you mean the Root? If I'm reading that correctly, you're sharing the root drive on your PDC with Full Control for Everyone. Is that right? If so, BIG OOPS!
If I'm wrong, then I just don't understand the share you're setting.
No- the home directory is located on a seperate drive. The Home directory is a shared folder on the drive for user's to store there personnel files ect.. the directory is shared to everyone with subdirectors permissions set to individual user accounts. The drive happens to be drive e: on the PDC.
K. First of all, giving full control to the shared folder isn't a good idea. That allows users to change permissions and create and delete sub folders.
When you're trying to map the drive to the user's folder, is this the syntax you're using?
\\abc.mydomain.com\userid$
Where abc.mydomain.com is the Domain Controller (Computer Name) and the userid is the user's folder shared as an Admin share?
used full control only for troubleshooting the shares. anyhow problem solved ended up being a bad fiber optic link. Seems it would allow connection and log in but could not handle any trafic, replaced fiber optic line and all is well, Thanx for the help though.
