Are you referring to a BIOS password that's required when you boot the machine, or do you mean a login username and password after you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to login?

Easiest thing to do is to contact the person who sold you the computer. All you need is one Administrator account login userID and password. Then, you can go in and delete the existing users and create new ones.

My recommendation though is to reformat the drive and start from scratch. You never know what kind of crap is on that machine...spyware, viruses, remote control software, key loggers, etc...

As it happens I know the user whose name appears at login and can ask for the password but the information on the drive may be sensitive so I would prefer to follow your recommendation. So can I trouble you for the information on how to reformat the drive?

Perhaps I can anticipate your reply to my last by telling you that I dont have access to an nt boot disk, all I have is a boot disk for my machine (xp home)

You can go to www.bootdisk.com and download the NT boot floppies.
Be advised, what you are downloading is a program that when executed, creates the bootdisks, not the boot disks themselves, so don't download them directly to a floppy disk, download the programs to your desktop and put a blank floppy in the PC, then double click the executable file to create the disk.

Warning:
If your WinNT4 Workstation CD is earlier than sp4 and your HD is larger than 7.8 GB see MS KB Q197667. Also the 3 bd can be found here:

"...So can I trouble you for the information on how to reformat the drive?..."

How to reformat the drive:

There are various ways - and presumbly this drive is ntfs format; even if it's not the routines below apply regardless.:

1) Use a '98 boot-disk and the Fdisk util to remove all partitions; then (with Fdisk) reconfigure the drive afresh, then format it using the format command.

Note: ntfs partitions/areas show up as non-dos partitions in Fdisk inspections.

2) Boot with a '98 boot-disk; run the delpart.exe utils (see below) and follow on-screen prompts to remove any/all partitions; then use '98 Fdisk/format utils to reconfigure/reformat the drive afresh.

delpart.exe - was part of NT3.1 resource kit; omitted from subsequent versions. Freebie download at various sites; e.g.

http://hercules.lss.ksu.edu/download/MSSTUFF/index.htm

http://www.mesich.com

27K-30K download. You can either add it to a '98 bootdisk and run at the a: prompt; or have it on its own floppy and change floppies once at the a: prompt (via '98 boot-disk boot). Personally if using delpart.exe I'd add it the '98 floppy - saves a floppy change.

There are otherways too but either of the above should do all that's needed.

and for a range of input re installaing '9x and also a briefer Fdisk tutorial:

(and Mesich has useful input too).

The easiest thing to do is format the drive from the WinNT setup disks...I'm not sure, but if u download the images of the diskettes, open them with WinImage or something like that, extract the files to your PC, and then copy these files to CD-R...it may work...but I'm not sure if it will...

Lots of ideas here. I'd just boot to the XP CD and install from there. You won't need to reformat manually or run fdisk. XP will do that for you. Partition the drive into at least two partitions (if size permits) and store OS and programs on one partition, and data on another.

Did this haggis have the left rear leg or the right rear leg missing? Depending on which it way it was running around the hillside you would have been able to determine which it was? Specimens/creatures with left rear leg missing are "very" rare...

ANYONE knows that there are clockwise (both left legs longer than right legs) and anti-clockwise (reverse leg configuration parameters) haggi (correct plural) in the wild. Haggi with one leg missing are factory-farmed, and will have no place on the dinner table of any self-respecting Scot, which (in the absence of any other evidence) I must assume shed-dweller is.

The reference to "a bill from the hospital" clearly means that the above-mentioned friend is of similar physical configuration to shed-dweller, and that the latter didn't get it all his own way in the ensuing fracas.

Good pint; the three legged species was indeed developed/cross-bred (pre GM era) in order to allow an easier chase, and thus be an easier catch, by the less fit "hunters" from urban areas. Native-born rural Highlanders are known to be very fit. As you remark, no self-respecting Scot/connoiseur would have the "factory model" on the dinner table; nor would they be so unfit as to be unable to chase/hunt the wild specimens.

One may wonder why this species has not been introduced to other parts of the world - as it will survive and flourish in really quite remote environs. Perhaps it's because the (bag)pipes would have to introduced too (and they're not an easy instrument to master properly). They (the pipes) promote the start of the haggis mating ritual if I understand correctly from my forebears?

Absolutely (I've been using this word more frequently lately, and must try and restrict it's use to appropriate situations). The three- legged haggis (Rabbie Burns was having the sassenachs on - the haggis isn't a "puddin" at all) was bred soon after it became the custom to clip the wings of grouse to allow well-heeled english visitors a better chance of hitting one at five yards with both barrels.

The 'pipes are indeed used to promote the start of the haggis-mating ritual. You may have noticed that the bagpipes have the requisite number of protuberances to appear to the female haggis as a prone male haggis in a state of ahem! - shall we say "arousal"? Need I say more?
