It is tricky if you install Xp first then try to install NT or 2000. If you do this,
you will change the ntldr and ntdetect.com files and will not able to boot in XP again unless you do the following after install NT

Boot with the startup disk
type these commands:
1. fixmbr C:
2. fixboot C:
3. copy x:\i386\ntldr C:
4. copy x:\i386\ntdetect.com C:
note: where C: is boot partion and replace x with your cdrom drive letter
it is much easy to install NT or 2000 first then XP.

Why do you want NT anyway, XP i much better.

good luck

Don't think you can 'add' NT to an XP system even if it's not fat32 - and yours is ntfs? If it is ntfs then it's ntfs5 and NT cannot read/see ntfs5 so it can't install/add itself there... NT requires SP4 or later installed - prior to the arrival of ntfs5 - in order to access etc. ntfs5 areas; I don't think NT set-up can handle ntfs5 as a consequence? In effect to add NT4 it has to go into a non ntfs5/fat32 partition, which means prepare one in advance and allow NT to format it during setup (fat16 or ntfs4)?

But you want to lose XP totally and go to NT4 alone?

Perhaps easiest way is to delete the partition via XP setup sequence - create/delete partitions. (Do this from a CD/floppies boot; as with NT/W2K, you cannot do it from within XP itself...) Then drop out and run NT setup to reconfigure the drive and install NT?

Re the NT floppies; you can make a set via the NT CD from within XP.

Boot to XP, locate the i386 on the NT CD and run the command:

winnt32 /ox

(Since XP is a 32bit OS, you use winnt32 rather than winnt; winnt is for 16bit OS.)

You will need 3 flopppies.

Equally if your bios allows, you can boot from the NT CD and run NT setup that way.

If even 'remotely' considering a dual/multi-boot in the future you might consider perparing for it when you (re-)install NT4; be it with '9x/W2K/XP?

Somethings/details are not quite clear...

Post back with your 'exact' HD details (and if you have one or two physical drives); partitions, formats what is installed where; also perhaps your boot.ini?

This way folks can see what is what, and perhaps come up with a suitable approach.
