I have NT with a 2G c drive, a 2G D drive and a large E drive. My c drive is down to 355 MB. I don't install software to my c drive, there's some stuff in my temp folder, but it's small, I regularly delete my user.dmp file, my outlook .pst file is only 5MB and I regularly empty my trash.
I had this problem some months ago, I posted here and got some help, but now, once again, my c drive keeps getting smaller. I had it up to 400 MB free at one time, and would be real happy to get it there again.
When doing a find for files and folders over 1000 kb, this is what I found:
pagefile.sys size:142,336
software c:winnt\system32\config size: 18,248
Software.sav c:winnt\system32\config size: 12,248
Software C:BACKUP\CONFIG size:12,416everything else is 7MB or less
I know enough to know that pagefile.sys can't be deleted, but what are those config files, do I need them? Are they usually this big?
Any other ideas?
I haven't tried defragging, but I'm thinking about it.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any ideas anyone may have.

Moin Trisha,
you must not ever delete any files in C:\winnt\system32\config, these files are your registry. You can go down with your pagefile (swapfile) to 2 MB in C:, which is the minimum required on C: drive (never delete the pagefile.sys on C:, you wouldn't be able to boot any more!!!), if you create pagefiles of a sufficient size in different drives (e.g. D: or E:). This will even improve your system performance, if D: and E: are physical drives, not partitions. If they are partitions only it will not touch the performance. In addition you can search for tmp files not only in the temp folder and delete them (be careful and just move the files to the recycler first, delete if there's no problem after a while) and define the size and location of log files, created by many applications. Just go look for a menue like settings or properties in your main applications, sometimes you find an entry for the log file there. I hope, it helps.
MfG, Carl.

Use the system applet to move the pagefile to another partition. There is *no* minimum pagefile required on the C:\ drive in windows NT4.0
The prime suspect in these cases are going to be your temporary internet files, delete these in the properties page for IE and set a maximum size.
Thirdly do not install your applications to the C:\ drive.
Good luck and remember partition magic can help by resizing your partitions...

I would add that you do not need a pagefile on c: and you will have no issues booting. You should never create multiple pagefiles on the system since this will slow your system down. Microsoft actually RECOMMINDS you move your pagefile from the boot partition to another drive so pagefile and system don't compete for disk i/o.
I recommend that you move your pagefile to another drive [never to a partition on the same drive!]. You will get a message about the crash dump file but just ignore it and go on. I would also suggest you make a temp dir on another drive. Edit your path and temp variables to point to this new temp dir. This will keep the temp files off your c drive. Best of luck!

If you can 'afford the pennies' for a second drive, perhaps go that route; put all data etc there, and some apps. too will probably go there OK?

Thanks for the replies!
Carl - you said not to delete the files in C:\winnt\system32\config, because they are the registry. Do mine seem too big at 18,248, 12,248 and 12,416?
I had been concerned that some application might be creating some type of log files. I have no idea how to know which ones they might be though.Joe, My IE is on my e drive and my temp internet files are there. I am concerned about where my netscape and opera are leaving temp files though. They also are installed on my e drive, but they may automatically still store files on c.
I don't have a physically separate hard drive, just partitions. I could check into that. I'm beginning to think I may need to pay someone to come here and look at my computer in person. Any idea how I could find someone with the proper skills in my area? What should I look for in terms of qualification or experience for such a person?
Thanks again!

Moin Trisha,
the size for the software file is ok, if there is a lot of software installed. Check this software for log-files: eventvwr.exe in C:\Winnt\system32 (Start, run, eventvwr or Start, programs, administration, Eventviewer), you can set the protocol size in 64KB steps and delete the current log. If you run a firewall and/or virus protection software, it will probably create a log file too, that you can empty from time to time. Some homebanking programs can be set to create a log file, check yours, if you run one.
However, all this won't help much since these files are ASCII-text files only, which don't take that much space. Your problem is: the system/boot partition is running out of space. You could either change the size using a partitioning tool like Partition Magic or buy a second harddisk and use Norton ghost to make a clone. While configuring the destination partitions you can tell the program, which size you want to have the partitions on the new disk. E.g. 4GB for the C: drive, the maximum working safely with WinNT is 7.8GB for the system/boot partition (some boot files like ntldr, boot.ini must be inside this range, otherwise the system can't boot, the files could get out of reach e.g. by defragmenting the drive, if it is too large). You could also consider a clean new install of your WinNT system with only the software you really need, having deleted the old partitions and created and formatted new ones with the desired size on a different WinNT machine before.
MfG, Carl.
