I have a pIII 550 MHz with 4 gb hardisk having 2 GB partitions with dual boot having win98/winNT resp.
I copied the dos system files in d: and entered the following in boot.ini
d:\="MS-DOS" under [operating system] with the active partition d:\ .
After rebooting i selected the MS-DOS and the i got a page fault error.
From then it does let me start winNT nor it lets me install winNT again even after reformating the hardisk .
Please give me a solution to install winnt on this computer.

MS-DOS has to have the boot/start-up files in the first 30Meg of the HD (i.e. in the first physical 30meg).

NT has to have its boot/start-up files within the first 2Gig physically on the HD.

'98 can have them within the first 8Gig (physically) of the HD.

In all cases this is regardless of what's there ahead of the respective OS boot-files.

The above is related to what is known as the boot-code boundary for each OS; it probably has some bearing here - but more info is required first to be sure.

You seem to suggest you have two Primary partitions c: and d: ?

You had 98 as FAT16 in c: and NT as FAT16 in d: ?

Or do you really have a single c: primary and d: extended partition?

Perhaps you can post back with some clarifiation as to what is what on your HD (partition formats/type/status); also what exactly you copied from c: to d: - and what you expected to happen as a result?

Have you done anything to c: partition apart from copy a file (MS-DOS system?) over to d: ?

It may be possible to help you dig yourself out the problem yo have created for yourself, but more info is needed.

Also when you do boot from cold what do you get on the screen; do you get the NT boot-menu, or do you get the '98 splash etc?
