After installing a newer version of Shell32.DLL the system does not start. It start loading the OS but after a while I get the blue screen with stop error c000021a (Fatal system error). I tried last known good configuration and VGA mode but got the same messages. Also tried booting from a floopy with DOS 6.2 but it doesn't recognize the hard drive. I downloaded boot disks but can't repair because I do not have the original installation CD. Does anyone know a way I can start the system to a DOS promt so I can copy the oldest version of shell32 to it's directory?

Thanks

If you have a NTFS formatted drive MS-DOS is no go, you need to undertake a repair install. If you do not have the CD/License I would suggest you buy one!

By the way NT4 does not include MS-DOS it is the "16bit DOS Sub System" aka "NTVDM".

The 'DOS' prompt is actually the NT Command Prompt, different thing entirely.

You can buy ntfsdos which will allow you to boot and manipulate ntfs files. There are other free solutions if you web search for them.

Thanks both of you for your responses. I was replacing shell 32 because I tried to run and application and it didn't because the version of shell32 was old so I downloaded a new version and replaced mine. My Win NT is SP6. I will do a search for a solution as suggested and let you know how it goes. Thanks again guys.

Actually, there is a newer shell32.dll in the sp6-SRP, yet doubtfull it will fix the OP's problem:
