Comment:

I'd like to know how to launch a Java application as a NT service, possibly using a batch file as the service.

Thanks in advance

what about setting something up like REPL
where a service logs into the domain with
user authentication and then a batchfile call as part of the user's profile startup directory..? (see control panel/services)

I seem to remember that there's an app in the resource kit that can start apps as services.

Rich you are thinking of SRVANY.exe. That only runs apps as a service not an actual BATCH file.
