Hi

We have a 3 NT server 4 and wants to implement some backup software, We might also upgrade 2 of the servers to Windows 2000. One is Webserver on another network and the other 2 file server is on the same network.

I have heard of seem some backup programs like HandyBackup that will do ftp, network and HD backup. Not sure how good is Arcserve. But are there any backup software that will backup to the most recent point if say a user deleted a file but the backup was done say 2 days ago and during those two days he has modified it. I saw something in SQL server that will do that, if a user deleled some data. If will backup to the point before he deleted.

We run Arcserve on a bigger scale - works well as long as you solve any known issues using the relevant patches from their site. You can also backup the individual SQL databases etc. Not sure about the "recent" point bit - suppose it can't do that.

We use both Arcserve and Backupexec for SQL. As NoTaGuRu points out you must ensure though that you purchase the relevant agents for the backup software to allow you to do this.

Also forgot to say that the backup software will only recover what has been backed up i.e. if you do a nightly backup at 1am for example and one of you users deletes something that he/she has created today it is not recoverable because all you have is what is on the backuptape up to 1am last night and not what has happened today. Todays work will be backed up tonight at 1am (in this example)

Backup Exec will let you back up across the network from the other servers on the same network (not sure about the one on a different network) and in order to back up at different points in the day using SQL you need to be using SQL server with all of your data in the SQL database. We have just switched to this and it out performs everything else. You still need a tape or other backup media device but you can restore back to virtually any point in time with the "virtual" backups created by SQL.
