Hello. I have an NT 4.0 network with 1 PDC, 2 BDC's, and a member server. One of the BDC's has a scsi tape drive. The machine is a Dell Poweredge 2300. I am running Veritas Backup Exec 7.3 Multi Server edition with SQL Agent and Exchange Agent installed. Sometimes, the backup fails one night for no apparent reason and then keeps failing until the drivers are re-installed for the scsi card and tape drive. Also, recently the backup software now reports that the backup failed because: "Storage device "ARCHIVE 0" reported an error on a request to rewind the media." When the drive is cleaned and the drivers are re-installed, it begins to backup but recieves the same error message on the verification phase. Then, any other backup attempt without re-installing drivers results in the same message. Has anyone ever had this problem, or a similar one? I was wondering first if anyone knew a solution before troubleshooting more.

I had the same problem while remotely backing up exchange. The exchange server must have its own tape device. I installed one two months ago, and haven't had the problem since. Hope this helps...

Dell has admitted to me more than once that their Poweredges have a bios issue on their tape drives that always manifests itself in the freaky backup problems you described. Before you call their support make sure you download the utility to diagnose the tape drive issues:
dds3diag.exe from support.dell.com
Hope That Helps.

Check with Veritas that you have the correct version number and build number for your machine and setup, upgrades to program often need upgraded tape driver and this solves all the problems at once.
Veritas helped me OK in Australia.

Hey.. you probably all won't see this but I fixed the problem. I found out from Veritas that Backup Exec 7.x and higher can't be on the same machine as SQL server 7, unless you change a resistry setting. I changed the setting and everything works. Thanks for all your help.
