Recently I installed nt server 4.0 on my pc. Previouly running W 98. This is an evaluation version of nt. At first I could only run in 16 colors until I installed service pack 3 and new drivers. Now able to get 16m colors, which is what I always used before.
Now I want audio. Have tried to install drivers for Crystal PnP Audio System Codec. No luck, but then again I don't really know how to install. I know the drivers are installed on the system files but still nothing shows up in Control Panel----Multimedia--Devices--Mulltimedia Drivers. There are four device types listed ( Audio Devices, Midi Devices, Mixer Devices, Line Input Devices )and when clicking properties for each, it says "No devices of this class are installed on this system". I am confused by terminolgy. Does this mean there are no drivers installed for each device or there no devices such as a mixer installed?
Just for grins I installed service pack 6, hoping it would fix the audio like sp3 fixed the display. No luck. And by the way. Stupid question: Do you need to install the sps in order(3,4,5,6)or can you just start with 6 and that covers all previous upgrades?
Anyway need some audio and some help desperately!
Using IBM Aptiva 2140 L5h, 233pII, 32 mg ram.
one other thing, when I partitioned the hard drive, I selected NTFS instead of fat16. What effects does this have. Thanks

For installation of multimedia click add unlisted device and then insert your driver disk. Then specify the location of the driver on the disk NT should then install the mutil media. I dont know why you installed NT anyway because its not really PNP compatiable and doesn't support USB. Its really only used for offices because its stable and doesn't crash when using software but appart from that its not really good for playing games or anything to do with multimedia. Trust me I know.
NTFS is very secure and reqiures users to be logged in to access the files on the NT machine it wont let MS-Dos stations see the files unless they are logged in.
NTFS is only really used on servers for networks or if you want a very secure workstation

Ian, Thank you for replying so quickly.
I installed nt(evaluation version) for use in a networking course that will begin soon. Have no interest in gaming.
I had previously tried the install procedures you mentioned (several times). Still no devices listed. At a point in the set up I'm informed that the files I'm trying to install are already in the system. Why don't they show up.
I've tried to get info on compatibility of my audio chipset from manufacturer, but have gotten no reply.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michael

I had a Crystal PnP and tried to install it under NT, I scoured the Web for drivers and eventually found them, unfortunately they didn't work either, I resigned myself to the fact that that chipset just doesn't work with NT, so I bought a SoundBlaster :)
