How do you configure a win 98 workstation (or laptop) to go on to a Win NT network, inclusing protocols, settings etc

assuming you have already installed the adapter card.
under Network Neighborhood's Properties
1.you need to install Client for Microsoft Network
2.install file and print sharing
3. Install Netbui protocol (easiest)
4. Under Identification give your computer a unique name
5. and under Domain or Workgroup which ever you have set up enter the name of that group or domain
6. On the NT machine you need to make a user account so it can be authorized at boot up
7.you need to make sure that the 98 machine is set to log into domain at logon

Mike, you gave the man four wheels and told him it was it a car. This set up will only work in RARE, small, stand alone networking envirements, if at all.

There is much more to consider for Ryan but still very easy to configure... if you know what the network environment is.

NetBui is nice and easy...but how about setting up TCP/IP? Odds are that he wants to join an NT domain AND use the Internet...HE NEEDS TCT/IP. Also, does the NT domain use DHCP or is it static? How about WINS? DNS?

Also, one cant assume that a person who asks how to join an "NT Network" knows anything about creating User or Computer account or the difference between a workgroup and a domain.

Also, how does he plan on connecting, LAN, dialup, or RAS? If Ryan is using a dial up or RAS, he probibly does not need file and print sharing, but mabey he does need PPTP.

You assumed, that he is using a LAN. All Ryan mentioned was a laptop.

Dont be afraid to ask questions to help the customer get it right the first time.

Hey David, You are right on the ball. I was just giving him one way and the easiest way to get his network started. There are so many ways you can choose to establish a network. I did not say that what I posted was the ONLY SURE FIRE WAY to establish the network. I was just offering a simple solution. If that did not work the user would be able to ask more questions. You and I both know they write whole books on this subject I just had to choose a chapter and post was not able to fit 798 pages on this post.
Thank You for your response.

Thanks a lot mike!!! Your answer solved my problem. If i had anything as complicated as David thought I might I would have had network people to ask.

I have been having problems doing the same thing as Ryan and I need to setup the network with TCP/IP because the only thing I want is the net on the NT machine. After searching through the microsoft site, I finally got the NT computer to recognise the 98 machine but i cant even seem to get the 98 one to see itself, let alone NT in the network neighbourhood!?! I have DSL for net so I have two ethernet cards on the NT computer (the DSL modem is DHCP and the other one is static). I don't know anything about WINS or DNS and I already have the cable connected so I am using LAN. Pleaswe give me the step-by-step because I know something but nothing about this. Please re anytime (hopefully soon).
